PORTRAITS FOR ASPIRING ARTISTS
Fridays November 13-December 18 1:30-3:30
Pre requisites…… courage and a sense of humor!
This is a class for all levels in a space full of artwork that supports the teaching taking place. For instance, if the concept of line or form, cool and warm colors, or values, prove confusing, the
answer will lie in a painting on the wall. Meyriel is a patient, compassionate instructor with
decades of experience with complete beginners and experienced artists of all ages
Beginning with the basic rules necessary for making a portrait, students will make several
exercise pieces on newsprint paper before completing a monochromatic portrait on a mid-tone paper. This helps students understand how light, middle, and dark values help to show a head is three dimensional.
Monochromatic media includes graphite, charcoal, black and white charcoal pencils, inks, torn paper. Color will be introduced in the form of acrylics, watercolors, oil paint, oil pastels, colored pencils, and inks.
Using an array of media, Meyriel and her students will explore the characteristics of each medium as well as the unexpected effects of combining them. After a few experimental pieces working with basic color theory including cool and warm colors, color mixing, creating mood with color, students will work on different surfaces like brown paper, newsprint, wood, and canvas.
